Glas Trösch and Corning Incorporated have created a prototype of a double-glazed unit featuring a central glass layer that is only 0.5 mm thick. The product will be presented to experts at the international construction exhibition BAU 2025.

According to Glas Trösch's press center, the company will focus on thin glass solutions in the future to further reduce the carbon footprint of architectural glass. The Swiss group announced its collaboration with the American technology company Corning Incorporated, which specializes in specialty glass, ceramics, and more.

The prototype to be displayed at the exhibition in Munich uses Corning ATG glass. This borosilicate glass is stronger than standard glass and heat-resistant. According to Corning, it is compatible with energy-saving coatings.

The insulated glass unit will feature glass just 0.5 mm thick. Corning ATG also allows for an increased width of the gas cavity, resulting in improved Ug values. The maximum sheet size for Corning ATG is 2200 x 3200 mm.

Currently, Glas Trösch is working on setting up the necessary production facilities and certification. The first thin-glass solutions are expected to be available for sale by the end of 2025.
