On February 12, 2025, AGC and Saint-Gobain officially inaugurated the Volta production line at the AGC Barevka plant in Teplice, Czech Republic. The Volta project aims to significantly cut CO₂ emissions and transition to sustainable flat glass production.
Volta is a joint project between AGC and Saint-Gobain, combining the expertise and investment of both companies. It marks an important step towards carbon neutrality.
The hybrid furnace operates using 50% electricity and 50% a mix of oxygen and gas, significantly reducing direct carbon emissions. Additionally, it incorporates a higher proportion of recycled materials than industry standards.
As previously reported by AGC, over its first ten years of operation, the furnace will reduce CO₂ emissions by more than 193,000 tonnes—the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide that 920,000 trees would absorb over a decade. Furthermore, the production process will utilise 100% recycled glass, enhancing the project's sustainability.
The project is funded with support from the European Innovation Fund.
