WAREMA Renkhoff SE has announced that its WAREMA KNX secure Wetterstation pro weather station has received a Red Dot Award in the “Innovative design” category. The recognition followed an evaluation of the product by the competition’s independent jury.

The device is designed for building automation systems. It collects weather data and uses it to control sun shading systems — venetian blinds, roller shutters and awnings. This helps reduce heating and cooling costs in buildings.

A key feature of the device is the absence of moving parts. Ultrasonic sensors (which convert sound waves into electrical signals) are used to measure wind speed, wind direction and temperature. Optical sensors are used to detect precipitation and snow. As a result, the device requires minimal maintenance.

The compact design has made it possible to create a clean appearance without unnecessary elements. This aspect was specifically recognised by the competition jury.

The weather station operates via the KNX protocol — an international standard for controlling building equipment such as lighting, heating, ventilation and blinds. The built-in parameters are configured specifically for the requirements of sun shading systems. The device supports functions such as sun position tracking, overheating protection, heat retention in rooms and safety control during strong winds.

Data from several sensors can be combined for more precise settings. For example, temperature and light level readings can be used together to manage the flow of solar energy into a room more efficiently.

WAREMA positions this device as an addition to its KNX product range. Availability depends on the country.

This year, VELUX also received two Red Dot Design Awards for its new roller shutters.
