Germany-based J. Schmalz GmbH has introduced the NEXO Pro passive exoskeleton for work involving frequent bending of the torso and lifting loads. According to the company, the system can reduce muscular strain on the lower back by up to 30%. Schmalz is positioning the new product for use in logistics, woodworking and metalworking, as well as assembly work.
NEXO Pro operates mechanically, without a battery or external power source. When the user bends forward, springs store energy. As the person straightens up, they release this energy and help raise the torso.
When lowering a load, the spring mechanism slows the downward movement of the torso. According to Schmalz, the system reduces muscular strain in this way. It transfers forces via an external frame to the thighs without additional compression of the spine.
The exoskeleton supports both movement and prolonged work in a bent-forward position. Such tasks include order picking, loading and unloading equipment, as well as assembling large or heavy components.
Schmalz also identifies woodworking and metalworking as potential areas of application. NEXO Pro can be used when loading machine tools and during subsequent processing of large components. The design is also intended for work in confined spaces, including vehicle cargo areas and containers.
Users can adjust the straps, level of support and the point at which support begins without tools. A separate switch allows the support to be activated and deactivated in a single movement. Switching is confirmed by an audible signal, so there is no need to check the system’s status visually.
Schmalz uses breathable, washable materials. The manufacturer also notes that the mechanical system requires no battery or associated maintenance.
During development, Schmalz drew on experience gained from the use of exoskeletons in logistics, woodworking and metalworking. According to the company, feedback from these working environments was incorporated into the design of the NEXO Pro.
NEXO Pro enters the segment of passive exoskeletons for back support, where manufacturers of specialised ergonomic equipment are already active. German company Ottobock produces the Paexo Back and BackX models. Dutch company Laevo offers the V2.5 and FLEX models. Swiss company Auxivo produces the textile LiftSuit. US company HeroWear offers the Apex 2 exosuit.
