The roof window manufacturer Velux has updated the wood chip extraction system at its plant in Østbirk, Denmark. This will cut CO2 emissions by 610 tonnes per year compared to the less energy-efficient system previously in place.
The new system functions like a powerful vacuum, collecting chips from over 20 machines. It automatically connects to the equipment and operates only when the machines are running.
Each year, the plant produces 1,000 tonnes of wood chips from FSC- or PEFC-certified timber. These chips are now burned in a new biomass boiler, which provides heat for the production facilities.
The upgrade supports Velux in achieving its goal of eliminating operational emissions by 2030.
