Association UMTS discussed what premium segment windows and façades are

During the III UKRAINE INVESTMENT CONGRESS, a panel discussion took place on the topic “Light-transmitting structures in premium real estate: new quality standards and market expectations.” The focus was on the role of windows, façades and profile systems in premium-class projects.

The discussion was moderated by Mykhailo Orlenko, Executive Director of the Association “Ukrainian Producers of Light-Transmitting Structures” (UMTS). Speakers included: Ivan Bohdan, General Director of “Winkhaus Ukraine” (the Winkhaus hardware brand); Oleksandr Siriachenko, Commercial Director of “profine Ukraine” (PVC systems Kömmerling); Anatolii Chehusov, General Director of EVB (aluminium façade glazing) and Roman Mykolenko, Director of KOMPAS-group (private property glazing in the premium segment).

In the production of windows for elite real estate, structural quality and professional installation remain fundamental. Users in this segment expect not only reliable thermal and sound insulation, but also protection against external threats such as burglary. Under wartime conditions, an additional danger has arisen: damage from blast waves and debris. Ukrainian manufacturers are now capable of producing windows certified for blast resistance classes 1–2, made of aluminium or PVC with aluminium cladding.

Premium means more than just quality. It includes brand, appearance, comfort and technology. In this segment, the client is “buying a feeling.”

Aluminium is traditionally perceived as more premium due to its visual and technical properties — for example, the ability to produce larger structures. However, as Mr Oleksandr pointed out, PVC systems can also be premium — provided they are of high quality, offer hybrid solutions (such as PVC with aluminium cladding), and include quality decoration and design.

In the premium segment, there is growing demand for large-format windows and façades. According to Anatolii Chehusov, most of their projects involve large-format glass structures operating at the edge of technical possibilities. Mr Ivan noted an increasing interest in automated systems — sliding doors, smart elements, and hardware connected to smart home systems.

In terms of sustainability, PVC and aluminium are recyclable. Their environmental benefits are not obvious when compared outside market context. However, in Ukraine, old windows are currently difficult to recycle due to infrastructure issues. Aluminium profiles from old windows can conditionally be reused as secondary raw materials for metallurgical production. Old PVC windows and doors typically end up in landfills, as they are not classified as recyclable material.

European trends in green building are becoming increasingly important for aluminium glazing, especially in office and business centre construction. According to Mr Anatolii, Ukrainian projects are interested in obtaining environmental certificates such as BREEAM and LEED. Mr Roman confirmed a demand for sustainability in the private aluminium premium sector. For large projects glazed with PVC windows, however, environmental friendliness is not a determining factor — the budget is more often decisive.

Nonetheless, European standards are gradually becoming a benchmark in Ukraine. Export also contributes to the spread of European trends. Our markets are interdependent, so increased attention to sustainability should be expected.
