VELUX signs long-term agreement with Novelis for low-carbon aluminium supply

VELUX Group has signed a multi-year commercial agreement with Novelis – a global leader in aluminium rolling and recycling – for the supply of aluminium with a high recycled content. According to VELUX's press centre, the new material, which contains more than 70% recycled content, will significantly reduce carbon emissions during the manufacturing of roof windows and accessories.

This long-term agreement replaces the previous memorandum of understanding signed in 2022. VELUX and Novelis have jointly committed to reducing the carbon footprint of rolled aluminium to no more than 3 kg CO₂ per 1 kg of material by 2030. For comparison, 1 litre of petrol burned in an engine emits about 2.3 kg CO₂.

“This demonstrates our determination to meet our ambitious goal within just five years. We are securing a steady supply of a key low-carbon material for our roof windows,” said Klaus Lorentzen, Senior Vice President for Products at VELUX.

Aluminium is a critical component in the production of VELUX windows, especially for external structural protection. At the same time, it is one of the main sources of emissions within Scope 3 (across the entire supply chain). Switching to aluminium with a high recycled content is a crucial step towards lowering the carbon footprint of the products. Using secondary aluminium can reduce emissions by up to 95% compared to primary aluminium.

“In collaboration with VELUX, we have developed aluminium alloys that meet high strength standards and support the circular economy,” commented Michael Hahne, Vice President of Novelis Europe.

VELUX and Novelis have worked together for over 40 years. Since 2022, the companies have been actively working to reduce the carbon footprint of the aluminium used in window products. More than 50% of aluminium supplies have already been replaced with recycled content material, and the partners plan to increase this share progressively.

It is worth noting that the company previously signed a 10-year agreement with ArcelorMittal for the supply of steel from recycled and renewable sources.
