The Ministry of Community Development, Territories, and Infrastructure has launched an information campaign on physical accessibility. The goal is to explain what accessibility elements should be included in state building codes, standards, and guidelines.
Currently, 83% of respondents consider accessibility a new value for society. Public opinion was studied by the Center for Social Research and Behavioral Economics with the support of UNICEF and the Accessibility Communications Council.
Ukrainians believe that creating accessible conditions for everyone should focus on:
- Changing people's behavior (34% of respondents);
- Creating an adapted environment (32%);
- Ensuring access to education and jobs (22%).
The study also showed that most respondents believe that the state and local authorities should be responsible for creating an accessible environment and society. At the same time, almost one in four is already contributing to the removal of barriers.
The information campaign began with an explanation of what a ramp should be like. The barrier to the physical accessibility of buildings and structures, pedestrian paths, and crossings are stairs. To ensure the accessibility of stairs, they need to be supplemented with a ramp. However, it is better to avoid installing non-standard ramps, as a slope greater than 8% (more than 4.5 degrees) poses a danger to people with disabilities when using it.
The next obstacle for people with limited mobility can be entrance doors.
