NSG Group's Pilkington Mirai architectural glass has received an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). Pilkington UK claims it is the lowest carbon glass of its kind. Independent verification shows that Pilkington Mirai contains 52% less carbon than standard 4mm float glass Pilkington Optifloat Clear.
According to the company, Pilkington Mirai, which means "future" in Japanese, is manufactured using alternative fuels, a high content of recycled glass, and 100% renewable electricity.
The Pilkington Mirai has a global warming potential (GWP) of 5 kg of CO2 per m2. By comparison, AGC Low-Carbon Planibel Clearlite produces no more than 7 kg CO2 per m² for 4 mm thick glass.
At the same time, NSG Group launched a carbon capture facility at its flat glass production plant.
EPDs provide data on the GWP of products by assessing carbon emissions at each stage of the life cycle. It assesses production and transport, emissions generated during product use, and end-of-life disposal.
