Medeco, a U.S.-based lock manufacturer and subsidiary of Assa Abloy, introduced the Traffic Cabinet Lock, designed to deliver a high level of physical protection for cabinets housing intelligent traffic systems (ITS).
The lock's advantages were recognized by the Virginia Department of Transportation, which upgraded and secured 6,000 cabinets containing electronics for traffic signal control. Previously, these cabinets were secured with mechanical locks and universal keys that were easy to duplicate, leaving these critical traffic control points vulnerable to vandalism or attack. Recently, the Medeco XT Traffic Cabinet Lock was named the Cyber Secured 2024 winner by *Security Today* magazine in the IoT/IIoT Security/Critical Infrastructure category. The jury commended the lock for addressing key vulnerabilities and providing controlled access, accountability, physical security, and system management.
The Traffic Cabinet Lock features a brass body and cylinder resistant to tampering techniques such as pulling, drilling, or striking. Access to cabinets is controlled, scheduled, and monitored, with the system logging who accessed or attempted to access the cabinet, as well as when and where.
The electronic locks for traffic cabinets can be easily retrofitted in place of existing locks.
According to the company, duplicating Medeco mechanical keys is only possible at authorized service centers with the proper authorization. The number of duplicates is also managed by the Italian manufacturer AGB.
