Vitro Architectural Glass has introduced the EcoArmor™ protective topcoat for Solarban® solar control low-e glass. The coating protects the surface during transport, storage and processing. It does not need to be removed from the glass before tempering, Vitro Architectural Glass reports.
EcoArmor™ forms a continuous protective coating across the entire glass surface. It protects Solarban® 70 and Solarban® 90 from chemical and mechanical damage during transport, handling in production and subsequent processing.
The main difference compared with temporary protective film concerns tempering. Fabricators do not need to remove EcoArmor™ before loading the glass into the furnace. During tempering, the heat of the furnace removes the coating. This means production does not require a separate film-removal stage or disposal of film waste.
According to Vitro, during production trials fabricators reduced the tempering cycle by 10–20%. They also recorded less furnace roller wave and a reduction of up to 33% in edge distortion on glass where the low-e coating had been edge-deleted before tempering. The company also reports more consistent glass geometry after the glass exits the furnace.
The coating is compatible with standard processing operations, including cutting, edge processing and washing. According to Vitro, fabricators can use the equipment they already operate for coated glass without special handling procedures.
Vitro initially offered EcoArmor™ for Solarban® 90. In September 2026, the company extended the coating to Solarban® 70.
Visitors were recently able to see EcoArmor™ at GlassBuild America 2026 in Las Vegas, USA. Vitro demonstrated the coating there and announced its application to Solarban® 70.
