Winkhaus, together with the research agency Heinze, conducted an industry survey on the German market. The survey included 100 window manufacturers and around 140 architectural and design practices. The results showed that product quality is the main criterion when selecting hardware (metal fittings and operating mechanisms for windows and doors). This was stated by 71% of window manufacturers and 82% of architects and designers.
Survey participants are increasingly facing bureaucratic burdens, a shortage of skilled workers and unstable delivery times. Around one-third of window manufacturers reported that time pressure has increased recently. For two-thirds of architects and designers, costs and project deadlines remain the main sources of pressure.
Window manufacturers and designers prioritise different aspects of their work. Manufacturers focus on installation, logistics and on-time deliveries. Architects take a broader view, placing greater importance on reliable planning and the technical compatibility of all system components.
One quarter of window manufacturers report frequent or occasional claims (customer complaints and product returns due to defects). The main cause is poor product quality. Installation errors rank second, while delivery delays and supply issues come third.
When selecting hardware, architects and designers primarily focus on ease of use and functionality. Around half of them also consider durability and service life.
Service and technical support are becoming increasingly important. Window manufacturers expect prompt information and direct contact with their account manager. Architects and designers primarily require technical support and professional advice.
"These findings are an important signal for us to align our products even more consistently with the real needs of the industry," said Alfred Dinkelborg, Head of Product Management at Winkhaus. According to him, the priority is no longer new products as such, but solutions that simplify workflows and deliver reliable performance.
"Reliability extends far beyond the product itself. This is precisely where we see our role: supporting the industry with high-quality products and expertise," Alfred Dinkelborg added.
Sustainable construction is also gaining momentum, although market participants interpret it differently. For 39% of architects and designers, it is a strategic priority linked to carbon footprint reduction and circular construction principles. At the same time, 59% of window manufacturers report growing demand for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly materials.
