AGC Energypane, a glass unit manufacturer in the Belgian city of Hannut, has introduced a pilot program for collecting and recycling old glazing. The initiative aims to return used glass to the production of new flat glass, helping to cut CO₂ emissions and reduce the use of natural resources.
The company offers a collection system featuring special 2 m³ containers for end-of-life glazing. These containers are spacious enough to minimize collection frequency while remaining compact enough to fit on construction sites without taking up too much space.
During renovation or window replacement, specialists can place glass without frames into these containers. When delivering new glass units, AGC Energypane collects the filled containers and transports the glass for recycling. The recovered material is then used to produce new glass at AGC's factory in Moustier.
In Ukraine, construction glass is not sorted and must be stored in landfills. When clearing areas of destruction, military administrations or authorized bodies may organize waste sorting or separate collection, including glass and glass debris, in accordance with waste management regulations No. 1073 of September 27, 2022.
Using recycled raw materials reduces CO₂ emissions by 0.7 tonnes per tonne of broken glass and prevents the extraction of 1.2 tonnes of natural materials. This way, AGC Glass Europe increases the share of recycled glass in its production while reducing environmental impact.
