Saint-Gobain introduced contactless glass cleaning system at German plant

Saint-Gobain has applied the contactless Tornado-Channel glass cleaning system from Wandres at its production site in Germany. Torgauer Maschinenbau GmbH reported this on its social media page. The technology removes up to 95% of the separator powder used at the plant even before the washing machine, reducing water consumption and cutting maintenance downtime.

At its Torgau plant, Saint-Gobain produces float glass and laminated safety glass (VSG), which is used in construction and the automotive industry. During production, a special powder is applied to the glass surface to prevent the sheets from sticking together. Previously, it was washed off in the washing machine with high water consumption, which led to microplastics entering wastewater and rapid clogging of filters.

The use of Tornado-Channel, which cleans the surface with air jets, has shown a tangible effect. According to the equipment manufacturer, during 17 days of testing, water consumption decreased by 15%, and the filters of the washing machine required significantly fewer replacements. As a result, costs were reduced and production stoppages became less frequent.

“I am impressed with the performance of Tornado-Channel. It removes almost 100% of the powder. The investment paid for itself in less than a year and proved its worth from the very beginning, since we had to stop the washing machine for maintenance much less often,” commented the manager of the VSG production line at Saint-Gobain.
