US-based company H.B. Fuller has announced the launch of its Kōfinity product platform. According to H.B. Fuller, the company will use the platform to further develop its Ködispace 4SG reactive thermoplastic spacer technology for insulating glass units (IGUs).

H.B. Fuller is positioning 4SG technology as a distinct category called Fusion Bonded Spacers — spacer systems that form a chemical bond with glass. The company also plans to expand the Kōfinity platform with new products for IGU manufacturing.

Ködispace 4SG technology combines the functions of a spacer, primary sealant and desiccant. During production, a robotic applicator applies the thermoplastic material directly to the glass. The material forms a chemical bond with the glass surface at the molecular level. If the manufacturer uses a secondary silicone sealant, 4SG also forms a chemical bond with it.

This approach creates a continuous edge barrier designed to prevent moisture ingress and gas loss from the IGU. This is important for maintaining thermal insulation performance. A failure of the seal can lead to condensation between the glass panes and reduce the thermal performance of the IGU.

By comparison, the Super Spacer warm-edge spacer uses a different bonding principle. The spacer is based on flexible silicone foam containing a desiccant. Acrylic adhesive is applied to the sides of the spacer, while a multilayer barrier limits water vapour penetration.

Both technologies therefore belong to the warm-edge category and use flexible materials. However, Super Spacer achieves initial adhesion to the glass through an acrylic adhesive, whereas Ködispace 4SG forms a chemical bond with the glass. The manufacturing processes also differ: 4SG is applied directly to the glass, while Super Spacer uses a prefabricated flexible spacer.

H.B. Fuller plans to expand the Kōfinity product range. However, the company has not yet disclosed the new products, their expected market launch dates or technical specifications.

Meanwhile, other spacer system manufacturers are advancing automation in IGU production. OKNA.ua previously reported that Swiss company Swisspacer had introduced a new service for the fully automated production of spacer frames.
