The press office of ift Rosenheim announced that standardised requirements have been created for windows, doors and façades that are resistant to vandalism. This is set out in the new technical guideline EI-06/1 “Vandalismushemmende Bauelemente und Einrichtungen” (Vandal-resistant building components and systems), developed with the involvement of building systems manufacturers and victims of vandalism.
The document outlines typical attack scenarios, the tools commonly used by perpetrators, and defines hazard classes. The aim is to help developers and architects better protect buildings and people, especially in public spaces, at railway stations, stadiums, or near retail facilities.
ift Rosenheim emphasises that conventional burglar-resistant structures often fail to withstand the force used by groups of vandals during mass events or protests. Participants in such attacks use improvised tools – from paving stones to road signs or waste containers – and deliberately destroy infrastructure elements either to gain access to buildings or to cause as much damage as possible.
The new directive covers windows, glazing, doors, gates and façades. It defines test methods, classification systems based on threat type, likelihood of attack and potential damage. It also provides recommendations on the appropriate level of protection depending on the area of application. Testing is carried out on installed structures together with all critical components: glass, hardware, locks and fixings. Variants of opening methods are tested separately.
Product certification is a key requirement for companies to market their products as tested and reliable in the window industry. Manufacturing quality must be confirmed through regular external monitoring. Moreover, correct installation is equally important: manufacturers are obliged to provide detailed installation instructions, which are considered during the certification process.
