The international roof window manufacturer Velux Group announced the launch of its second solar park in Spain. The new facility, Gerena II, located in the municipality of Guillena (Seville), has a capacity of 60 MW and can generate around 90 GWh of electricity annually.
Together with the first park in Alhendín (Granada), which became operational in 2024, the company produces 167 GWh per year. This not only covers the renewable electricity needs of its European factories but also creates an energy surplus of 65% above current consumption.
According to the company’s estimates, these measures will help reduce CO₂ emissions by 30,000 tonnes annually. This is equivalent to the air purification effect of 3,000 hectares of forest.
The project was implemented in partnership with BayWa r.e. under a ten-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA). The company’s factories receive electricity from the nearest grids, but thanks to the agreement Velux Group can claim to meet 100% of its renewable energy needs.
The first park in Alhendín was developed under the principle of agrivoltaics: part of the land was adapted for agricultural use.
Previously, the profile brand REHAU announced plans to install photovoltaic panels at its factory in Poland to improve energy independence.
