New European Bauhaus to focus on affordable housing and green construction

The European Commission has presented development plans for the “New European Bauhaus» (NEB) initiative, which will focus on affordable housing, environmentally friendly construction and the introduction of new approaches in cities.

The initiative has been included in the European Affordable Housing Plan. The Commission aims to strengthen the role of the Bauhaus in transforming the urban environment and supporting communities in EU countries and beyond.

European cities are facing high housing costs, the impacts of climate change and rapid technological change. People need safe, high-quality and comfortable spaces to live in.

The New European Bauhaus will focus on three areas.
The first is sustainability and the reuse of resources in construction.
The second is the active participation of residents in the development of their neighbourhoods.
The third is the role of education, culture and art in environmental transformation.

The Commission plans to create tools for the efficient use of buildings and derelict spaces. A digital catalogue of examples of affordable and sustainable housing for communities and businesses will also be launched.

Special attention will be paid to training professionals in the construction sector. The Bauhaus Academy will help to upgrade skills and develop businesses. Communities will receive support for recovery after crises and disasters.

The initiative provides for new financial mechanisms for small participants and the mobilisation of private and public funds for projects. A special quality label for the best initiatives will also be introduced.

The New European Bauhaus will continue its work beyond the EU.
The programme will support the green recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine, as well as the development of international educational centres.
In Ukraine, the initiative already has successful examples. In particular, Promprylad Renovation from Ivano-Frankivsk became a winner of the New European Bauhaus prize.

The next step will be the engagement of cities, businesses and civil society organisations. The European Commission calls on stakeholders to join the Bauhaus community and develop modern, affordable and environmentally friendly living spaces.
