Siegenia has launched the second generation of its Smart Window Handle Gen. 2. The manufacturer announced the update itself. The main change is the transition to a newer version of the Matter protocol together with significantly more stable wireless communication.
The first generation of the handle was presented at Fensterbau Frontale 2024. It replaced a traditional key-locking window handle and enabled users to lock the window remotely via an app. However, according to specialist platforms and user feedback, the first version experienced connectivity stability issues. Users reported connection losses and the need to perform factory resets.
Siegenia released firmware updates for the first generation, but further development has now been focused on Gen. 2. The company has officially stated that support for the first generation has effectively come to an end. All future improvements will apply exclusively to Gen. 2.
In the second generation, the company has refined the handle position detection algorithm. Window status monitoring is now more accurate, position indication is clearer, and the number of false detections has been reduced.
The mechanism itself has also been revised. The defined handle positions are now more distinct, the clicking feedback during operation is more pronounced, and the drive operates more smoothly.
The handle supports the Thread wireless protocol within the Matter standard. This ensures compatibility with popular smart home ecosystems including Apple Home, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings and others. The multi-fabric function (shared access via QR code) allows the handle to be controlled simultaneously from multiple devices or applications.
Installation is the same as for a conventional window handle. It is then connected to a smart home application via Bluetooth by scanning a QR code. Once configured, it can be controlled remotely to lock, unlock and monitor the window status.
The handle can also be integrated with other Matter-based devices. For example, when a window is opened, a smart thermostat can automatically reduce heating output in the room. This helps minimise heat loss.
