Early in 2022, Saint-Gobain Glass introduced its first bird-friendly glass. According to the German Association for the Protection of Biodiversity, 100 million birds die every year in Germany as a result of collisions with glass surfaces. In the US, there is a larger area of glazing, they call a figure of 1 billion annual collisions with fatal consequences. Globally, the issue of biodiversity is gaining importance. So more cities are adopting regulations to address this problem. In late 2019, the New York City Council obliged developers to use bird-friendly glass in new buildings.
In the first products of the 4BIRD family, Saint-Gobain used screen printing and etching. 4BIRD®Frit has silk-screened patterns to make it easier for birds to spot obstacles. 4BIRD®Etch contains acid-etched patterns. And at the end of 2022, 4BIRD®Lami glass with sequins became available.
4BIRD®Lami is a laminated glass with an available bird-friendly interlayer. The Saflex®FlySafeTM 3D PVB film from the American company Eastman is used with COOL-LITE® solar control glass. The 3D sequins are placed in the PVB film (PolyVinylButyral).
For example, the 66.4/12/4/12/4 mm double glass with 4BIRD® Lami COOL-LITE® XTREME 70/33 (II) - 4BL-1 has a threat factor 6 according to the American Bird Conservancy. In comparison, a brick wall has a 1 and ordinary glass, which is invisible to birds, has a 100.
Saint-Gobain also plans to produce glass with UV coating only visible to birds - 4BIRD®UV. The first information about this technology, appeared in 2006. The technology was invented by engineers of the German company Glaswerke Arnold.
