Pilkington UK to produce architectural glass using hydrogen instead of natural gas

Pilkington UK, a part of the NSG Group, has started using hydrogen instead of natural gas. Tests of hydrogen burning in a glass furnace were completed. And the company has signed an agreement with Vertex Hydrogen to sale low-carbon hydrogen. Pilkington UK has thus become a pioneer in the Group's decarbonisation of production processes. NSG Group plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

For four days, the company used biofuel in a kiln at its St Helens plant. During this time, 165,000 m2 of low-carbon float glass was produced. The tests showed that the glass furnace, which accounts for about half of the UK company's total carbon emissions, can operate with significantly lower emissions without affecting product quality.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has confirmed that the Group's carbon plans are scientifically sound. They will help limit the average rise of global temperature to well below 2 °C.

Vertex Hydrogen press centre reports that the company will supply Pilkington UK with hydrogen. The company's production capacity reaches 1000 megawatts of low-carbon hydrogen. According to the company, this is enough to provide the fuel consumed by a city the size of Liverpool. In terms of population, it is like Mykolaiv before the full-scale invasion.
