In its Sustainability Report 2024, VELUX announced that it is testing a scheme for taking back old roof windows for recycling. The pilot programme was launched in the Netherlands in 2019. The company is now working on expanding the scheme and recycling process.
The company is looking for new ways to reduce its carbon footprint and waste generated after dismantling old windows. The take-back scheme allows used roof windows to be collected and their materials recycled — wood, aluminium, and glass.
VELUX highlights that already 97% of the timber used in production is FSC or PEFC certified. This confirms that the wood comes from forests managed according to ecological and social standards. In addition, the company uses recycled aluminium, which reduces its carbon footprint.
In 2024, VELUX managed to achieve a 22% reduction in CO₂ emissions in production compared with the baseline year 2020. This is another step towards its strategic goal of reaching climate neutrality in all manufacturing processes.
The VELUX focus on a closed-loop system and the use of recycled materials aligns with global trends. Recently, the profile brand REHAU reported that more than 60% of profile systems in its Window Solutions division are made from recycled PVC.
