ift Rosenheim announced a profound transformation in the window industry

At the annual press conference, the main message from ift Rosenheim was clear: the European window industry is moving into a transformation phase where the “good enough” approach no longer works. This was stated by the institute’s director, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Winfried Heusler, who emphasised that the changes shaping the future of transparent structures go far beyond mere “cosmetic” updates.

Among the key drivers are the revised Construction Products Regulation (CPR, Regulation (EU) 2024/3110), which came into force on 7 January 2025, as well as the Digital Product Passport (DPP), circular economy requirements, adaptation to climate risks, and shifts in market structure. “Yesterday we focused on the U-value; tomorrow, the decisive factor will be disassemblability,” Heusler stressed.

ift Rosenheim outlined a long-term action plan — from the practical implementation of CPR and digital product passports to the development of sector guidelines for flood-resistant, vandal-resistant and wind-resistant structures. The institute highlights that manufacturers must shift from “minimum compliance” to systems ready for reuse and extreme weather conditions. This also means switching to machine-readable data formats — PDF documents will no longer meet the requirements of the future DPP. “We cannot rely on PDFs and scanned diagrams. The core of the DPP is structured, machine-readable data,” the director of ift explained.

Economic signals point to a growing “premium vs standard” market polarisation: large companies are scaling up automation and serial factory production, while small local producers have an opportunity in the renovation of the existing building stock.

ift Rosenheim urged the industry to prepare in advance for new requirements, rather than waiting for regulatory pressure.
