During fensterbau frontale 2022, the Swiss company Glassresq presented a method for repairing scratches on glass. Glass restoration is not based on the mechanical removal of burrs but on the plastic deformation of the glass surface.
Glass is an inorganic melt that has cooled without crystallising. Glassresq's specialists, so, heat the surface of the glass until it undergoes plastic deformation, known as flow. Glassresq notes that they manage to avoid lenticular distortions on the glass when restoring it. One of the advantages is that it is a "dry" process, as no water is used for cooling.
According to Dominic Duer, managing director of Glassresq, this method of restoration is 90% cheaper than replacing glass.
This scratch-removal approach is possible on float glass, laminated safety glass, heat-strengthened glass, tempered glass and polycarbonate glass. Based on its experience, the company claims that tempered glass is easier and quicker to work with than float glass (particularly therefore the tension ratio around the edges).
The company is most often asked to repair window glass and sliding doors. The method helps to eliminate the effects of flying sparks during construction work, scratches from stones or vandalism.
Glassresq is currently active in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and the USA.
