At the end of 2022, AGC Glass Europe started production of low-carbon float glass at its plant in Belgium. The company is currently expanding its production capacity. A plant in France has also started producing low-carbon glass. The AGC press centre reported this.
Low-carbon glass is identical in quality, aesthetic and technological characteristics to regular AGC glass. However, its production produces about 40% less CO2. Data calculated for Planibel glass. The production of Low-Carbon Planibel Clearlite produces less than 7 kg of CO2 per m² for 4 mm thick glass.
The increase in production capacity has made it possible to expand the range of glass. The low-carbon variant is available with Stratobel safety glass, Stratophone acoustic glass, iplus thermal insulation glass, Stopray and Energy solar control glass.
The development of environmentally friendly building materials is becoming a global trend. For example, glass manufacturer Pilkington has started using hydrogen instead of natural gas to reduce CO2 emissions.
Sustainable buildings have a smaller ecological footprint, minimise the consumption of non-renewable resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For investors, healthy and sustainable buildings provide higher rents and sales prices.
AGC will gradually roll out low-carbon glass production across the group.
