Norwegian company Hydro, owner of the WICONA brand, has begun constructing an aluminium recycling plant in Torija. According to the company’s press centre, the foundation-laying ceremony took place on March 17.
The investment in the new plant will total 180 million euros. The facility will be able to recycle up to 70,000 tonnes of used aluminium annually, contributing to reduced energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. The plant’s total production capacity will reach 120,000 tonnes of aluminium ingots per year, complementing the nearby Hydro plant in Asuke. The company expects to create 65 new jobs by 2026.
The Torija plant will feature modern sorting technologies and the production of alloys with a high content of recycled aluminium.
“We cannot afford to export such a valuable resource as used aluminium. The new plant will strengthen our recycling capabilities in Europe, reduce energy consumption, and lower emissions,” said Hanne Simensen, Executive Vice President of Hydro Aluminium Metal.
Hydro also emphasizes the need for legislative support for aluminium recycling. The company believes it is crucial to close gaps in the CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) and limit the export of aluminium scrap outside of Europe.
Another initiative in the market: Schüco International KG and TSR Group GmbH & Co. KG have joined forces to promote the reuse of aluminium in construction.
