The Swiss non-profit association Re-Win is implementing the Window for Ukraine initiative. The association saves components from being thrown away and organises their reuse. As part of the “Window for Ukraine” ReWin collects Swiss windows and transports them to Ukraine.
In 2022, Re-Win organised several deliveries to Ukraine, where the Initiative Generation received windows.
In Switzerland, property owners carefully dismantle windows. Re-Win measures and catalogues the resulting components.
From the warehouse, the windows are transported to Ukraine by truck or train.
This is a great initiative, but it has some caveats. They deliver ready-made structures, so it may be necessary to widen or narrow the window opening.
In addition, these are old windows and the question of their energy efficiency class remains. There is a high probability that they do not meet the requirements of the current DBN B.2.6-31:2021 “Thermal insulation and energy efficiency of buildings”. And there is a big doubt that these windows will allow us to implement the principle of build back better. That is, to help rebuild many times better than before. If the owners of the damaged buildings perceive the initiative as a temporary solution, then the warning is not relevant to them. Otherwise, soon, they will still have to think about improving the thermal insulation of their house or apartment. And they will have to decide where to throw old windows.
Ukrainian window manufacturers also help with the glazing of specific objects and do not reduce the energy efficiency of windows during reconstruction.
