Saint-Gobain adds energy sources to decarbonise glass production

Saint-Gobain has conducted a test production of float glass using more than 30% hydrogen. The research tests conducted at a plant in Germany. The company's press centre reported about it.

This proves the technical feasibility of using hydrogen for the production of flat glass. The company estimates that this reduces direct CO2 emissions by up to 70%. And this complements Saint-Gobain's initiatives to reduce emissions. For example, AGC and Saint-Gobain are collaborating on an industrial glass production by on low-carbon electricity.

The programme at the Germany plant is carrying out in cooperation with the independent German laboratory Gas and Heat Institute Essen e.V. (GWI), which specialises in industrial gas technology. This was preceded by tests at two Saint-Gobain Research centres.

The development of low-carbon glass production methods is a general trend in the industry. For example, Pilkington UK is also testing the combustion of hydrogen instead of natural gas.
