The nationwide social change campaign “Barrier-free means when you can” has been launched with the goal of promoting the idea of an inclusive society and encouraging Ukrainians to help create accessible environments.
According to national research by the Centre for Social Change and Behavioural Economics supported by UNICEF, 87% of Ukrainians consider barrier-free environments an important value, but 26% still do not fully understand its meaning.
Munir Mammadzade, head of UNICEF Ukraine, noted: “Creating a barrier-free society, where every child and family has the chance to realise their potential, is an investment in Ukraine’s present and future... The campaign delivers a clear message: barrier-free means opportunities for everyone.”
The campaign covers six key areas of accessibility: physical, informational, digital, social-civic, educational, and economic.
The first wave of the campaign was presented through the video manifesto “When you can”, which helps explain the essence of barrier-free environments. The second wave will involve active public participation: people will be able to contribute to creating accessible spaces in their cities and villages.
Government ministries are implementing flagship projects that are changing approaches to public services, transport, education, culture, sports, and rehabilitation. All this is shaping an environment where inclusivity gradually becomes the new standard.
In particular, the Ministry of Infrastructure is implementing the “Barrier-free movement” project – a route that allows people with limited mobility to get from point A to point B without obstacles, receiving necessary services along the way. But it is important to remember: this route starts at home – with the ability to open the door and step into the world.
