A study by the Bundesverband Flachglas in 2019 shows that only about 6% of the sheet glass is returned to the glass furnace. At best, “wrong” or “old” insulating glass is processed into glass wool. In Ukraine, only “clean” glass can be used again, OKNA.ua clarifies.
Hegla, which specialises in glass processing equipment, has proposed a different approach to glass reuse. It has created equipment that separates the components of a double-glazed window.
The IG2Pieces cuts the insulating glass unit along the edges. The glass panels remain almost intact and separated from the frame. Manufacturers manually disassemble only insulating glass units with high-value-added applications. The process is labour intensive and time-consuming. IG2pieces makes it economically viable.
In Ukraine, glass with an energy-efficient layer and triplex must be taken to special landfills. However, when private customers replace their windows, double-glazed units often end up in ordinary garbage cans.
Recently, Miroplast started talking about recycling old PVC windows and doors. What exactly this will lead to is still unknown.
The IG2Pieces machine is a joint project between AGC and Hegla. As part of the development agreement, AGC focused on the supply chain and Hegla on the equipment. The concept is seen as a basis for ensuring a circular cycle.
