Sustainable and inclusive cities will become an EU mission

As part of the Horizon Europe programme, the EU is starting to develop a new sixth mission. It will have dedicated to the New European Bauhaus (NEB). The plan is to transform urban areas into beautiful, sustainable and inclusive ones.

The New European Bauhaus is an interdisciplinary initiative launched in 2020. After two years of implementation, the initiative has made significant progress: it has an active community of over 1000 members, an “advisory” group consisting of respected figures in the world of architecture, culture, design and sustainable development.

Now the NEB’s progress is to be consolidated in a specialised EU mission. It should provide a greater structure, and clear direction, and combine actions and investments.

During the preparatory phase, the NEB mission will be further formulated.

The NEB community plans to develop and transfer its experience in affordable and sustainable reconstruction to Ukrainian cities.

Among the other five EU missions:
  • adapting regions to climate change,
  • fight against cancer,
  • creating 100 climate-neutral and smart cities,
  • protection and restoration of marine and freshwater ecosystems,
  • sustainable soil management and restoration.
In 2024-2027, the EU plans to allocate more than €3 billion for the programmes.
