Customers and developers are better off ordering translucent structures with safe double-glazed units with triplex or tempered glass. This opinion was expressed by Oleksandr Maryshchin, Development Director of Glas Trösch Ukraine, during the WKC Installer 5.0 online conference.
Multilayer laminated glass (triplex) is two or more layers of glass glued together with a film that can hold fragments on the polymer layer in case of an impact or blast wave. For example, ordinary glass breaks into sharp, dangerous fragments that can injure people and animals. And Ukraine's current situation with constant shelling has shown how important it is to minimise damage through glass. According to the UN, 80% of injuries from shrapnel and debris are glass injuries.
Several Ukrainian companies in the window industry have become interested in making blast-resistant windows. For the first time in Ukraine, window structures were manufactured that received test reports for blast wave resistance classes EXR1 (NS) and EXR2 (NS) by the requirements of DSTU EN 13123-2:2006. It was fitted with Glas Trösch double-glazed windows with P4A triplex - two 4 mm thick panes and 4 film layers.
The P4A resistance category according to DSTU EN 356:2005 (EN 356:1999) means that laminated glass with 4 layers of film can withstand multiple impacts of a 4.110 kg steel ball with a diameter of 110 mm from a height of 9 m. All shards remain on the film.
According to Mr Maryshchin, the company's Ukrainian warehouses have P4A glass. In Ukraine, Glas Trösch produces laminated glass with EVA film (non-autoclave film lamination) and receives glass with PVB film (autoclave lamination) in a finished format. The glass used is made in Europe.
