Pilkington is working on integrating organic photovoltaic films into laminated glass

Pilkington Holding GmbH is participating in the OPV4.0 project, which aims to develop high-efficiency and durable organic photovoltaic (OPV) films for use in laminated glass. The project is being carried out in collaboration with research institutions and companies in Germany.

OPV4.0 is focused on developing specialised films that can convert sunlight into electricity. Unlike conventional solar panels, OPV films can be applied to glass and remain semi-transparent.

Pilkington Holding GmbH specialists are working on the integration and evaluation of OPV films in glass units for the construction and automotive industries. They are analysing parameters, technological processes, and the possibilities of integrating photovoltaic modules within glass layers. Additionally, options for connecting these modules to the electrical grid are being explored.

After the prototyping phase, demonstration samples of OPV glass will be produced for architectural and automotive applications.

The project will continue until May 2027 and is funded by the EU and the government of North Rhine-Westphalia under the EFRE/JTF NRW 2021-2027 programme.

Another European glass manufacturer, AGC Glass Europe, has focused its efforts on recycling glass from used photovoltaic panels.
